New PGP programme to turn passion into profit [NZ]

Deer Industry New Zealand and the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) have today announced they will partner in a new Primary Growth Partnership (PGP) programme called Passion2Profit.

The $16 million, seven-year programme is intended to be a game-changer in the production and marketing of venison. It’s expected to deliver $56 million in extra revenues a year from the end of the programme, and reverse the ongoing decline in the size of the national deer herd.

Deer farmers battling euro headwinds [NZ]

Deer farmers have struck a sickly euro that is taking the gloss off venison prices.

The economic jitters of Europe are counting against them and farmers are back to where they were last year, with the meat schedule at a range of $6.20 to $6.45 a kilogram, even though market prices have lifted.

Of some consolation is that velvet prices are up, and this is expected to offset the lower venison returns for farmers with velvet and venison herds.

Feral deer policy gaps

A feral problem looms for producers across the State but a policy gap in deer control leaves loopholes in the efforts to address the growing problem.

The Federal Government describes deer as an expanding pest problem that causes “major impacts” to agriculture and noted that new control methods may be needed as deer numbers grow.

Brilliant velvet, weak venison prices [NZ]

Brilliant velvet, weak venison prices.

It has been a tough start to the year for many non-velvet deer farmers, with dry conditions and a disappointing venison schedule combining to put pressure on pastures, budgets and patience.
Deer Industry New Zealand (DINZ) chair and Mid Canterbury farm advisor Andy Macfarlane urged deer farmers to remain proactive in managing both the feed situation and their budgets.

The Sheep, Deer and Cattle Report: Lamb and venison prices fall again as feed shortages spread

Deer

More summer schedule easing for venison, to values below last year as the Euro firms against the Kiwi to levels not seen since 2012.

Early stag sales have seen respectable average prices but disappointing clearances for animals with only venison genes, while velvet animals have been well sought after, with good prices and nearly 100% sold.
